| Vila Nova de Foz Côa
It is the capital of the almond trees with around 100.000 trees planted in an area of 38.000 hectares. Côa is considered World Heritage due to the open air rock paintings that were found dated back to the Paleolithic, located next to the tributary with the same name. It is a land of good wine and interesting happenings such as the local Winery Co-op that, in 1999, has submerged 60.000 bottles in the waters of the Côa River. The wine produced here is made of the best Portuguese varietals and the river water temperature is constant. The opening of some of those bottles was and will take place every year and after carrying out the organoleptic tests it is possible to verify the results. The parish counts with magnificent landscapes and old monuments, such as «castros», the Archaeological Site of Vale Canivães, the «citânia» of Taja, the Mother Church established by King D. Dinis, other Romanesque and Baroque style churches, magnificent manor houses, remains left by both the Romans and the Arabs. And do not forget that nearby the village, in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, is located one of the most beautiful and scenic castles of Portugal, after the castle and the surrounding village have recently been refurbished. To visit the region is not only to imagine the past since the Paleolithic, but also to admire what it is good and natural, such as wines, sausages and almond sweets. |
